ELIX, supported by UNICEF and funded by the European Commission (DG ECHO), began in October 2017 the implementation of an educational program for refugee and immigrant children and their parents in Attica.

The project will support refugee integration in schools and is designed to provide day-to-day coverage of the educational needs of children aged 3-17 and daily support for the school study for children aged 6-15.

It proposes tailor-made non-formal education by combining psychosocial support with Balanced Literary Approach, among other teaching methods, in order to promote independent learning and active participation through the whole language learning.

The project will provide thus homework support, mother tongue education, language and life-skills education for out-of-school children (including unaccompanied children), early childhood education, promotion of parent’s integration and capacity building of ELIX teachers.

All courses are conducted by two educators, one Greek and one from the pupils' community.

In particular, the actions of the program include:
- Preschool classes for children aged 3-5 years
- Greek language lessons for children aged 6-17
- English language classes for children aged 6-17
- Natural science lessons for children aged 6-17
- Mother tongue classes for children over 6 years of age
- Life skills courses.
- Greek language lessons to parents.

In Attica, the program is implemented in the hospitality centers of Eleonas and Skaramangas, at the ELIX Learning Center (20 Patision st, Omonia) as well as at the 51st Elementary School of Athens (40th Akominatou str.), the 20th Athens High School (44 Koraka, Athens) and the 48th Gymnasium of Athens (Koraka 44, Kato Patisia).

ELIX educational centers hosted at the 51st Primary School and at the 48th Gymnasium of Athens have been allocated for this purpose by the Municipality of Athens under the "Open Schools program", an initiative of the City of Athens, funded exclusively by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.
