Activity description
ELIX is a Greek NGO focused on non-formal education, inclusion and voluntary work. The organization is currently implementing a non-formal education project supporting migrant and refugee youth. As an ESC volunteer in the position of ‘enhancing refugee inclusion’ you will be responsible to support the operation and the function of the Multispace of ELIX by organizing activities for young people residing in the center of Athens. Your tasks will include: a. support and recruitment of young migrants and refugees in order to participate in an international voluntary service project either in Greece or abroad, they will also be responsible for administrative work to support the Multispace, such as register beneficiaries who are interested to participate, b. free basic computer lessons: Teaching basic computer skills such as navigation in the computer and internet, creation and use of email, use of online applications. Such lessons could involve young teenagers from 15 to 18 years old but also their parents and young adults, c. Free computer programming lessons: Computer
programming and different coding languages, d. Poetry nights: Creation of a collection of poems created by children’s refugees and migrants, e. Intercultural capoeira lessons: Lessons to acquaint with the art of capoeira to increase agility, strength and overall health, f. Board games tournament evenings: Discovering new games through a large selection, Yoga classes: Classes for meditation, flexibility and relaxation for the body, mind and soul, g. Intercultural "Arts and crafts" workshops: Handicrafts such as knitting, painting, quilling, collage, jewelry making, h. Intercultural theater workshop: Participants will have the chance to learn more about improvisation, verbal and nonverbal communication, as well as theater techniques, i. Activities to promote sustainability, healthy lifestyle and environmental awareness. Participants are welcome to either support already existing activities or organize their own with the support of ELIX staff.
Accommodation, food and transport arrangements
Volunteers will be hosted in a rented apartment in Athens that will be shared among them, with chances of sharing room. The volunteer will receive a monthly food allowance (6 euros per day), and pocket money too (6 euros per day). Travel costs to and from Athens are covered up to a certain amount, depending on your current location's distance to Greece. Greek language courses will be provided, if possible, by I Greek volunteer, however if it is not, it will be provided by the Online Linguistic Support, and insurance is covered by HENNER SAS. On-arrival training and mid-term evaluation will be provided and organised by the Greek National Agency.
Training during the activity
Volunteers will have the chance to develop their organizational skills by being involved in the preparation and implementation of different kinds of activities, improve their sense of responsibility and initiative towards the tasks undertaken, work in a team in a highly multicultural environment, meet different people and cultures. Besides that, they will have the opportunity to develop a social network and participate in seminars, trainings and other cultural actions of ELIX or partner organizations.
Participant profile
Available for 9 months. Volunteers should be ready and willing to work in the ELIX office together with other volunteers and staff of the organisation. Your application will be evaluated mainly on the following criteria: previous volunteering experience (preferably in workcamps) and/or international Youth Exchanges, good understanding of non-formal education and informal learning, support for sustainability, gender equality and social inclusion, good computer skills (Internet, Microsoft Office, Google Doc), good command of English.
Project Duration
It is important to mention that the duration of the project will be 252 days (which means 9 Months, including travel days).
