SOCIO-ECONOMIC AND GEOGRAPHICAL CONTEXT OF THE PROJECT

The project will take place in the city of Bolzano / Bozen, which has 100,000 inhabitants. It is the administrative centre of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano-Alto Adige/Bozen-Sudtirol (500,000 inhabitants in the entire province).

The Alto Adige/Sudtirol is part of the Italian region Trentino-Alto Adige/South Tyrol, which includes the two provinces with special status of Trento and Bolzano/Bozen.

It is the most northern Province of Italy and borders with Austria and Switzerland, as well as the Italian regions of Lombardy and Veneto and the Province of Trento. The special autonomy allows the Province to have legislative power in many materials normally under state jurisdiction or regional (such as health, education, training, employment, transport and roads).

Having been for centuries (until 1919, the Treaty of Saint-Germain-en-Laye) Tyrolean-Habsburg territory, most of the traditions are derived from this historical membership. There are three official languages in Alto Adige: German (especially the South Tyrolean dialect), which is spoken by 62.2% of the population as a native language, Italian, spoken by 23.3% of the population (which resides almost completely in Bolzano and other 4 major cities) and the Ladin, a Rhaeto-Romanic language spoken in some valleys (4% of the population). The remaining 10,5% are other languages spoken by migrant populations.

The school system, as well as most of the associative system, is divided according to language. Depending on the school attended, German or Italian are taught as a "second language", while in the Ladin schools lessons are taught in all three languages. Our association use mainly the Italian language in the activities.

The Alto Adige/Sudtirol covers an area of 7,400 km ², 80% of which is classified as mountainous and only 8% flat or hilly. The climate, however, is influenced by the Mediterranean, thanks to the chain of the Alps which acts as a barrier, so they range from about 40 ° in the summer of the most southern districts to -18 ° in the winter in the upper valleys. Fully inserted in the Alps, the landscape of the province is dominated by mountains, with the highest peak is the Ortler, which reaches 3.905 meters. Very famous are the Dolomites, in the eastern part of the province, declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2009. As a result of the mountain territory, many South Tyrolean athletes have won several competitions in the field of winter sports (sledding, ice skating, ice hockey) and South Tyrol boasts some of the greatest mountaineers, as Reinhold Messner, the first person in the world to climb the 14 highest mountains in the world without the use of oxygen.

The economy is driven by tourism, intensive agriculture (especially apples and wine) and industry.EU european solidarity corps 4x3 GR

Bolzano/Bozen - According to the latest census, 74% of the population of the city is of Italian mother tongue, 25.5% of German and 0.68% is Ladin-speaking. Bolzano is the capital and largest city of the province and is always on top of the ranking of Italian cities with the best quality of life.

Bolzano, with its medieval town center, the presence of Gothic and Romanesque architecture and bilingual driving directions is a unique case of a city where mixed Italian-Austrian culture elements coexists, which becomes a natural tourist attraction.

ACCOMODATION

The volunteers will live in an apartment, in a double room. The house consists of 2 bedrooms, a living room /dining room with kitchen, one closets, a bathroom and a balcony. It is located just few minutes by bicycle and 15 minutes walking from the historic downtown of Bolzano and a short distance from most of the structures in which the ESC volunteers will work. The city is well served with cycle paths and each volunteer will be given a free card to use the public transport during the whole period of ESC. The apartment is nice and is located on the first floor of one building that also host an office and a mechanical workshop.

The house does not want to be only an apartment of hospitality, but also an educational place: with "Volunteers Family House" we mean not only the physical, but also the climate that should exist between the inhabitants, that will live in the months of their ESc as if they were staying in a family.

The volunteers will have the chance to get in touch with the responsibles of the house and will relate with them in a relationship of listening and respect. They and the coordinator of the project will be available for every eventuality. With "family atmosphere" we means to have attention for the personal growth and group growth, so that cohabitation is also an opportunity for enrichment for the future life, working or not.

In some cases there may be accommodated at the apartment also volunteers in the civil service or, for limited times within a project, local young people who are in a development project in which the voluntary work becomes a tool for personal growth.

The rules of coexistence will be explained in detail in the enclosed regulation and in the early days in Bolzano.

To buy grocery, the volunteers can go weekly to the supermarket, with which the association has an agreement to which the invoice is sent directly to the association, so that volunteers should not anticipate anything. During the activities, volunteers can still eat in the centers.

  • The volunteer will work 5 days per week for an average of 30/ 35 hours, may in the weekend too.
  • The volunteer can have meals in some of the centre.
  • The volunteers will be hosted in the Volunteer House.
  • Duration of the project: 8 months
  • Number of hosted Volunteers: 4
