BACKGROUND OF THE PROJECT
In the last 7 years, our organisation has been collaborating with Palestinian organisations on different projects related to human rights and human rights education. We hosted several groups of youth and youth workers coming from different cities in Palestine, and we would like now to experiment a great project in which we will be able to train youth workers to lead a group in Palestine. We want to come from the experiences lived by refugees in Palestine.

With our colleagues from Palestine, we would like to raise awareness about the refugee topic among people. We believe that there is a need to talk about the political, economic and social situation of refugees in our societies. Raising awareness among youth of our different countries; exchanging on how refugees are perceived by youth and population in general; and how young people want to change it.

We also have the need to train our youth organisations to host a new public in our projects. For instance, Concordia made the choice to host refugees civic service volunteers in our different delegations. However, we first need to make sure that we are ready for that, and we will be able to support youth as best we can.

This project is designed for two different kinds of partner organisations: those, like our Palestinian partners, who are situated inside refugee camps, and those who host refugees in their countries and feel the need to invite people to work on the topic. In France, like in more and more countries in Europe, we are facing nationalism and the development of extreme right political parties, racism and general discrimination towards vulnerable populations.

We will work with one refugee camp in Palestine: Dheisheh in Bethlehem, with the Palestinian Laylac organisation, and we will certainly work with a refugee camp in Jenin. Those refugee camps are home to Palestinian people who had to leave their homeland because of Israeli occupation. They fight for the right of return, which means that they will keep on fighting for their rights until they can go back home.

Every year Guillemette Champ, regional delegate of Concordia Normandie-Maine, is travelling from France to Palestine, in order to meet different organisations in the country, different people and activists, but also to learn how to prepare the young people with whom we are working. Sending youth to a country under occupation is not trivial. So, for this project, and especially for the youth exchange, Concordia is supporting sending organisations a lot, in order to prepare participants before departure. It is also the reason why leaders have been trained during the training course that took place in France in November.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT
The main goal of this project is to create understanding and awareness among young people and populations in general about human rights and refugees, through gathering young people coming from very diverse backgrounds.

Specific objectives of the youth exchange are:

  • Creating an exchange space for young people coming from different backgrounds, cultures, countries and migration experiences.
  • Giving young people the possibility to experiment real actions, discover and reflect on them.
  • Supporting young people to understand that they actually have acting power in the world in which they live
  • Developing materials which can be used by participants back home, within their organizations/communities
